What is a green smoothie?
Eating green smoothies is a great way to add healthy green leafy vegetables to your diet. Greens provide additional vitamins and minerals.
Green smoothies usually contain a mixture of fresh or frozen fruit, fruit juice and green vegetables such as kale or spinach. Avocado, mint and spirulina are also often added for more green color.
MyCabbage smoothieis a great example of that - and it's kid-approved, too! This kale smoothie also contains frozen fruit, sugar-free applesauce, and water.

While kale and spinach are the most common ingredients in green frappes, there are many ways to make them green.
- spinach
- Cabbage
- white turnip
- Romaine salad
- carrot tops
- cabbage
- Mint
Feel free to add or replace any of these with the kale and spinach in this recipe. However, they can affect the tropical taste.
Green fruit for green frappes
You can also add fresh green fruits and toppings to your smoothies to give them more green color.
- celery
- avocado
- spirulina powder
- green apples
- Stone
Remember that any of these can change the flavor of this recipe, but experimenting is what makes smoothie recipes so much fun!

Tropical Smoothie Cafe Island Duplicate green smoothie recipe
This tropical island smoothie was inspired by one I tried before at Tropical Smoothie Cafe. We don't have it nearby, so I'm used to making it at home.
Tropical Smoothie Cafe has two of these tropical green smoothies, the Island Green Smoothie and the Detox Island Green Smoothie.
Plain Island Green contains spinach, kale, mango, pineapple and banana. Their Green Detox Smoothie contains all of the above plus naturally sweetened fresh ginger.
Smoothie s ananasomthey're delicious, but this green version takes them to a new tropical level.
Components
Here's what you need to buy at the grocery store to make my version of this Tropical Island Green Smoothie recipe:
- frozen spinach
- frozen cabbage, chopped
- frozen mango
- frozen pineapple
- banana
- coconut water
If you want to make a "detox shake," you can add a 1-inch piece of peeled, fresh ginger.
These tropical ingredients should be available at most grocery stores. Check the freezer aisle for these ingredients.
You can also freeze yours from fresh. I like to throw fresh spinach and kale in the freezer before they're ready for smoothies.
You can do the same with fresh fruit - just chop up the mangoes and pineapples and store in airtight containers that can be frozen.
However, you can use fresh fruit, although you can add some ice to the blender to freeze the smoothie. (Learnhow to cut a fresh mangoandfresh pineapple.)
You can also add your favorite protein powder or collagen powder to the mix for an extra boost of protein.

If you're the type of person who prefers a smoothie bowl to a cup or glass, you can try the following toppings:
- Chia seeds
- granola
- slices of fresh banana
- pieces of fresh pineapple
- slices of fresh mango
- slices of fresh apple
- coconut flakes
- almonds, macadamia or cashews
- sprigs of mint
- fresh blueberries
- dried fruit or berries
- Bee pollen
- hemp seeds
- cocoa flakes
Any of these would be delicious in the Tropical Island Green Smoothie Bowl, but if I were you, I'd go with fresh fruit, coconut flakes, and chia seeds!
You can also make a parfait from this smoothie with a little fresh sweetened honeywhip creamor Greek yogurt on top.
Variations and substitutions
There are many ways to make your own recipe for this Island Green Smoothie:
- Use fresh fruits and vegetables.Frozen vegetables and fruits help give your smoothie body and reduce heat. If you want, you can substitute fresh fruit and add ½ cup of ice.
- Missing ingredient? doubled. No cabbage? Use extra spinach. No mango? Use extra pineapple. This smoothie is easy to customize.
- Use your favorite liquid.Liquid is the key to softening frozen fruit, but you can play around with it. I used coconut water, which does not add any additional flavor. You can use coconut milk, almond milk, orange juice, mango juice or pineapple juice as liquid. Even plain, filtered water will work just fine.
- Sweeten up.You can add honey, agave syrup or maple syrup (or your favoritesweetener) if this smoothie is not sweet enough for you.
- Make it less sweet.Use more greens if needed to combat the sweetness.
- Make it thicker.Use more bananas, chia seeds or tofuGreek yoghurtfor thickening the frappe.
If you end up with leftover spinach kale, consider using it in theseKale Sausage Frittata Egg Muffinsor thatCasserole with eggs and spinach— two of my favorite breakfast recipes.
